Nautilus Shines During North Pole Anniversary

Petty Officer David M. Meir receives his enlisted submarine qualification “dolphins” from USS Providence (SSN 719) Commanding Officer Mike Holland at the North Pole.  Providence was in route to 7th Fleet from its homeport in Groton Conn. and surfaced at the North Pole to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first submarine polar transit of the USS Nautilus (SSN 571) in 1958. Topside personnel from USS PROVIDENCE (SSN 719) moor at an ice floe at the North Pole.  Providence was in route to 7th Fleet from its homeport in Groton Conn. and surfaced at the North Pole to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first submarine polar transit of the USS Nautilus (SSN 571) in 1958.
